Extra Place Races – More places paid on selected races

On selected Extra Place races, Betfred will pay out more each-way places than standard. Just back your horse each-way in one of the nominated races and if it finishes in the extended place positions, you’ll get paid at 1/5 odds on the place part of your bet.

Overall rating: 8 / 10

New and existing verified online customers, 18+. Applies to Each-Way singles and multiples in nominated Extra Place races only. Antepost bets do not qualify. Standard dead heat rules apply, and extra places may revert to standard terms if field sizes drop below specified thresholds. T&Cs apply.

What are Extra Place Races?

Extra Place Races are selected horse races where Betfred improves the standard each-way terms by offering additional place positions. For example, instead of:
– 3 places each-way, Betfred may pay 4 places.
– 2 places each-way, Betfred may pay 3 places.

If your each-way selection finishes in one of these extended place spots, you’ll be paid on the place part of your bet at 1/5 of the win odds, according to the enhanced place terms advertised for that race.

How it works (step by step)

1. Check which races have Extra Places

  • Look at the list in the promotion or on the Horse Racing homepage.
  • Races with Extra Places are usually clearly marked (e.g. with an “Extra Places” label or similar).

2. Place your each-way bet

  • Place an each-way single or an each-way multiple including the nominated race(s).
  • Bets must be placed on the specified day and on the nominated race markets.
  • Antepost bets on the same races do not qualify.

3. Get paid if your horse lands in the extra places

  • If your horse finishes in any of the extended place positions (e.g. 4th in a “4 Places instead of 3” race), Betfred will:
    • Settle the place part of your each-way bet at 1/5 odds.
  • Any winnings (win + place parts, if applicable) are credited when the race market is settled.

What qualifies and what doesn’t?

Qualifying bets

  • Each-way singles on nominated Extra Place races.
  • Each-way multiples that include the nominated Extra Place race(s).
  • Bets placed on the specified day for the listed races.

Non-qualifying bets

  • Antepost bets on any race, even if it later becomes an Extra Place race.
  • Bets on races that are not nominated for Extra Places.

Standard racing rules apply unless explicitly modified by the Extra Place terms.

Limitations and field size rules

  • Dead heat rules apply as normal for place payouts.
  • Extra Place – 3 Places: if the field reduces to fewer than 7 runners, standard place terms will apply.
  • Extra Place – 4 Places: if the field reduces to fewer than 12 runners, standard place terms will apply.
  • Extra Place – 5 Places: if the field reduces to fewer than 16 runners, Betfred will pay 4 places at 1/5 odds.
  • If a race is reclassified from Super Extra Place to standard Extra Place, then Best Odds Guaranteed will not apply to that race.
  • In the event of a dispute, the decision of the Betfred Management Team will be final and based on the Terms & Conditions.
  • Betfred may exclude certain customers from this offer due to internal risk policies or staking restrictions and will notify affected customers separately.
  • Betfred reserves the right to withdraw the promotion if required for reasons beyond their control (system failures, supplier issues, etc.) and will aim to communicate any withdrawal as quickly as possible.

Pros and ideal type of player

Main advantages

  • Extra safety net: horses finishing 3rd/4th (or worse) can still be profitable in boosted each-way races.
  • Works well for big field handicaps where place value is key.
  • Straightforward mechanic – standard each-way rules with more places paid.

Best suited for

  • Horse racing bettors who regularly play each-way, especially at competitive odds in larger fields.
  • Value hunters looking to maximise place returns on solid, but not necessarily winning, selections.
  • Bettors who like to build each-way multiples using races with enhanced place terms.

Responsible betting tips

  • Extra Places are a value edge, not a guarantee of profit – still stake at levels you’re comfortable with.
  • Focus on races you would normally bet and use Extra Places as a bonus, rather than forcing action on every flagged race.
  • Avoid chasing losses across multiple races, even if several offer enhanced place terms.
  • If racing stops feeling fun or starts to feel compulsive, use Betfred’s safer gambling tools or seek external support.
